Plainfield, NJ – World renowned doublebassist Gary Karr returns to Plainfield on Saturday, November 18, 2017 to join the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra for an encore performance of Jose Serebrier’s Nueve: Concerto for Double Bass. Commissioned by the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra for their 50th anniversary and written especially for Karr, Nueve premiered in 1974. Karr’s return to Plainfield, his former home, marks a rare public appearance and one of only two performances on the east coast in 2017.

PSO, led by conductor Charles Prince, will also welcome Elmira Darvarova as featured soloist in Amram’s Elegy for Violin and Orchestra. Ms. Darvarova is a Grammy-nominated recording artist and award- winning performer, former and first female concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and current director of the New York Chamber Music Festival.

Karr will also be featured in Dragonetti’s Concerto No. 3 in A major for double bass and orchestra and Bruch’s Kol Nidrei Op. 47 for cello and orchestra.

The Overture from Rossini’s William Tell will begin the concert, and it will conclude with both guest artists performing the Gran Duo Concertante by Bottesini.

“Music lovers across the tri-state region have expressed their excitement about Gary Karr’s upcoming appearance with PSO,” said Peter LoMonaco, president of the PSO Board of Directors. “This is an extraordinary opportunity not only to see a rare public performance, but also to see him share the stage with Elmira Davarova, with whom he has performed before.”

Acclaimed as "the world's leading solo bassist" (Time Magazine), Karr is the first solo doublebassist in history to make that pursuit a full-time career. Since his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in 1962, Karr has performed as soloist on six continents with orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Simon Bolivar Orchestra (Caracas, Venezuela), Jerusalem Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, and with all the major orchestras of Australia.

The Orchestra celebrates Karr and Darvarova at an after party following the concert at 1412 Evergreen, one of Plainfield’s historic private residences. Admission to the after party is $50 and tickets can be purchased at www.plainfieldsymphony.org or paid at the door with a reservation.

As New Jersey’s oldest community symphony and the third oldest continuously operating community symphony in the United States, the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra represents the highest standard in musical excellence in programs designed to educate and uplift local audiences. Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through a grant administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
