The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of its acclaimed music director Charles Prince, invites you to experience the October 14, 2023 season opening concert, “Spanish Fiesta.” The richness of several iconic Mexican and Spanish composers and their works will be celebrated.
Opening the program will be the widely recognized and important Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2. Mr. Márquez is noted for employing musical forms and styles of his native Mexico. His Danzones are based on the music of the Veracruz region of Mexico and are the most widely-known of his compositions, often used in ballet productions and symphonic concerts. The world-wide popularity of his Danzón No. 2 (1994) has led to the discovery of other pieces by the composer that are increasingly being performed throughout the world.
The popular guitar piece by Joaquín Rodrigo, Fantasia para un gentilhombre ("Fantasia for a Gentleman") will feature guest soloist Carlos Cuestas. “As a classical guitarist and early plucked instrumentalist, Carlos Cuestas is an active performer based in New York City. His musical versatility has allowed him to perform as a soloist and in chamber, orchestral, and traditional music ensembles on different plucked instruments in the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Ireland.” This zesty, dance-filled concerto owes its success to both the inspiration of the seventeenth-century Spanish priest and guitarist Gaspar Sanz and to the inclusion of all sorts of Baroque forms.
The concert will conclude with Manuel de Falla’s ballet pantomime, El amor brujo (“The Sorcerer Love”) with mezzo-soprano, Cheri Rose Katz. Manuel De Falla was one of Spain’s most influential and defining composers. This ballet-pantomime is in one act based on a story concerned with love, death, exorcism, and release. Cheri Rose Katz is a renowned opera singer, ASCAP singer-songwriter, recording and voice-over artist, executive producer, repertoire coach/teacher, artistic advisor, and innovator in the music and entertainment industry.
You will not want to miss this showcase of brilliant Spanish and Mexican masterpieces featuring two outstanding artists, so please join us on October 14, 2023 for a “Spanish Fiesta” of sight and sound.
